Abound Dog Food Review

Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

We give Abound dog food a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Abound dog food is a trademark of The Kroger Company. The Kroger Company’s grocery stores are the only in-person locations where you can purchase Abound brand dog food.

Abound provides a balanced selection of grain-free and grain-inclusive dog food recipes and specialty recipes for puppies and small and large-breed dogs. All Abound food and treats are 100% natural and contain no artificial colors or flavors, animal by-product meals, wheat, corn, or soy.

There is little information available about the company, and they do not have an official website, but the brand is available at www.kroger.com.  Although it was available on amazon, all their recipes are currently unavailable, and there is no certainty that they will return.

    Abound Food Reviewed

Abound dog foods were developed by a team of nutritionists and food scientists. They use natural, high-quality ingredients and prepare them in a way that naturally delivers optimal nutrition for dogs. Abound Grain-Free recipes are high in protein and low in carbohydrates, without grains that some dogs find difficult to digest.

Who makes Abound and where is it produced?

Abound is a brand of The Kroger Company. Kroger is the largest supermarket chain in the United States, with over 2,000 stores across 35 states. Kroger representatives have stated that all its Abound products are manufactured in the United States and contain ingredients sourced from the United States.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good & Bad)

Abound uses high-quality meat ingredients as their primary protein sources, which include chicken, turkey, lamb, and salmon.

    • Salmon can provide the primary source of protein for dogs, which can help manage and reduce food allergies. It is also an excellent natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for maintaining a healthy coat and skin. Omega-3 fatty acids are also a natural anti-inflammatory in a dog’s diet; they’re beneficial to dogs suffering from inflammatory bowel disease or joint diseases like arthritis
    • Chicken helps dogs build lean muscle mass and provides omega-6 fatty acids, which maintain healthy skin and coats. It’s also high in essential amino acids and glucosamine, which promotes bone health.
    • Turkey is a lean, white meat that helps dogs gain muscle. It is also a highly digestible source of protein, and turkey-based recipes may be an alternative for dogs that have food sensitivities or allergies to beef or chicken-based recipes.
    • Lamb is high in essential amino acids and a good source of dietary fats, which aid in energy maintenance. Red meat also contains several vitamins and minerals, which help with muscle development and promote good skin and coat health in dogs.
    • Flaxseed is used in some of Abound’s recipes and is commonly known for its omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and protein. Fiber is essential for a dog’s digestive health, while protein provides energy and supports the immune system.
    • Green peas are high in vitamins A, B1, B6, C, and K, which help improve bone health. They are also high in lutein, an antioxidant nutrient that promotes eye, skin, and heart health. Peas are a natural source of fiber and are high in carbohydrates.
      pumpkin

    • Pumpkin supports dogs’ digestive health, and its high fiber content can help dogs suffering from constipation or diarrhea. Pumpkin is also high in vitamins A and C, which benefit dogs’ vision and immune health. Pumpkin is a low-calorie dog food sometimes recommended as part of a pet weight-management program.
    • Brewer’s yeast promotes healthy skin, hair, eyes, and liver function in your dog, and the high levels of B vitamins may reduce anxiety in dogs. Brewer’s yeast can also be used as a probiotic and digestive aid. Yeast ingredients, according to some critics, can cause allergies. That may be true, but only if your dog is allergic to the yeast itself (as with all allergies).
    • Canola oil can be a great source of omega-3 fatty acids but is also a controversial ingredient since it can be derived from genetically modified rapeseed.

Abound uses several grains in their recipes

Abound uses ingredients such as oatmeal, barley, and brown rice. Some dog owners choose not to include grains in their dog’s diet, but it’s best to check with a veterinarian before switching to a grain-free formula. Grains contain a lot of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and they provide carbohydrates and aid in the preservation of the shape and crunch of dry pet food.

    Abound uses Rice Bran

Abound also uses a small amount of rice bran in some of its recipes. Rice bran is a grain by-product that some consider a low-quality ingredient. It is made from the outer rice kernels when rice is processed into white rice and, therefore, lacks the nutritionally dense center of rice.

    Tomato Pomace

Tomato pomace is an ingredient that is left over after processing tomatoes into juice, soup, and ketchup. Many people appreciate tomato pomace for its high fiber and nutrient content, while others dismiss it as a cheap pet food filler. Cooked tomatoes, like ripe tomatoes, are safe for dogs, and tomato pomace is a common ingredient in many dog foods.

A Quick Look at Abound Dog Food

    Pros
    • Grain-free and Grain inclusive
    • Formulated with nutritionists and food scientists
    • No artificial colors and flavors
    • No by-products
    • High-quality protein
    Cons

    • Lack of transparency about the company.

    Recall History

In November 2018, the 4-pound and 14-pound bags of Abound Chicken and Brown Rice dry dog food were recalled for elevated levels of vitamin D. The recall was sent out by Harris Teeter and Sunshine Mills.

High levels of vitamin D are toxic. Dogs of all ages are vulnerable, but young dogs and puppies are particularly vulnerable. The signs of a toxic reaction to vitamin D include vomiting, weakness, depression, loss of appetite, weight loss, and constipation.

According to the FDA, the recall has been terminated. There have been no recalls since 2018, but we encourage you to stay up-to-date and aware of any future recalls.

    • Live Long and Pawspurr– ”Like I mentioned, Abound is one of the only dry dog foods that Woody will eat. Woody eats grilled chicken and rice as his primary meals with the kibble supplementing his hunger and making sure he is getting a more diverse nutritional balance. He has never been overly excited to get a full bowl of kibble, but it helps him satisfy his hunger in a healthy and cost-effective manner.”
    • Dog Food Advisor– “Abound is a grain-inclusive dry dog food using a moderate amount of named meat meals as its dominant source of animal protein, thus earning the brand 2.5 stars.”

    Conclusion

Abound dog food uses high-quality ingredients in its recipes, with grain-free and grain-inclusive formulas, and there are options for dogs that benefit from grains and for dogs that may have allergies. Abound does not have a direct website, and it is difficult to find information about the company. Nonetheless, the recipes contain nutrient-dense ingredients, and Abound’s reviews are mostly positive. We recommend Abound for your dog but remember that switching brands in small steps is essential to minimize stomach upset.
